WINE: A TALE OF EARTH.
One morning, _fty years ago, a grape-producer took his two young grandsons to his vineyard in the
Valpolicella hills. The vineyard overlooked the entire Verona valley.
“Look at the earth. Here, touch it; can you feel how moist it is?” the grape-producer asked his grandsons.
The soft, red earth smelt of clay. “Look into the valley,” he said. “Can you see the workers irrigating the land? Up here, the earth irrigates itself. The layer of marl between the earthand the rock draws up water.
”The two boys were fascinated by their grandfather’s tale, but for a while they thought he was joking.
As time passed, however, they understood that the earth was the secret behind
the excellent wine that delighted everyone who tried it.
Today the two grandsons continue to tend the vineyards at the Tenute SalvaTerra winery.
They combine the latest technology with traditional grape-growing techniques,
but they never forget the key to it all: the earth.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WINE
The Tenute SalvaTerra winery, is an estate situated in San Pietro in Cariano, at the heart
Valpolicella valley, in the north-eastern Italian region of Veneto. The passion for winemaking led Furia brothers to team up with a group of entrepreneurs to create a great project built on strong local roots, quality and teamwork. Making Wine requires love, experience, skills, time and complete dedication. At Tenute SalvaTerra, the philosophy behind our wine and work is to strive for excellence in a virtuous cycle geared towards quality. We all know that the efforts of each individual are essential for the entire team, for this reason every member of our company works to their full potential every day.
THE ORIGINS OF OUR WINE
Winemaking is considered a great tradition in Veneto, in Valpolicella it is a proper heritage. Making wine in Valpolicella and the Triveneto is a way of paying tribute to this area’s extraordinary natural resources. Northeast Italy has its own unique climate because lies between mountains and sea, a perfect position for vineyards. Consequently, it is no surprise that some of the world’s most renowned wines come from this area.
A UNIQUE TERROIR
There are not two places alike and a region’s character reflects in the people who live and work there. The more generous the land is, the harder its people work. In Valpolicella they till land, mine marble, fashion iron and also produce cheeses that bring out the full flavor of the region’s wines.
Amarone and Ripasso, the two lovingly crafted reds for which Valpolicella is renowned for, are produced with a complex grape-drying technique called appassimento. A unique blend coming from the land and climate makes Valpolicella perfect for growing top-quality grapes. THE PRIDE OF OUR WINERY: ITS VINEYARDS.
Tenuta di Prun di Negrar is situated 500 metres above sea level, one of the highest vineyards in Valpolicella. It encompasses the marble quarries that were mined to build Verona’s spectacular Roman arena. A layer of stone separates the soil’s flaky red rock from a layer of marl, which enable this unique vineyard to produce the grapes for our Riserva Amarone Classico “Cave di Prun”.
The vineyards of Tenuta di Mezzane sit between 400 and 450 metres above sea level, their clayey soil is constantly washed, eroded and shaped by the rains. The local landscape is peppered with olive groves and cherry orchards, and the gentle breeze carries their aromas to the vineyards. The land is perfect for the creation of structured, full-bodied red wines, such as Amarone and Ripasso, which exude the valley’s hallmark bouquet of cherries and red berries.
Villa Giona, a 16th-century mansion and estate sheltered by the hills of Castelrotto, produces a range of incomparable wines. Its 9,600 plants per hectare are tended to produce no more than one kilogram of grapes each in order to ensure wines of unique concentration and quality.
The vineyards of Tenuta di Vescovana and Tenuta di Stanghella are located in the Euganean Hills, which have the perfect conditions for making Pinot Grigio and sparkling white-wine Prosecco. The hills experience drastic temperature variation between day and night, which gives the ripening grapes their wonderful aromas. The vineyards’ alluvial soil, which is mainly clay and silt, is high in minerals and microelements, endowing their wines with elegance.
